Charge: Build a talent base in the Bemidji area that lays
a foundation for broad-based prosperity and prepares the community
and region to excel in the knowledge and innovation economy.
Existing Destiny Drivers:
- The performance of our students (pk-16) will rank in the top five
in the state by 2015.
Issues/Opportunities to consider:
- How do we deal with the current and impending labor shortage?
- How
do we encourage greater skill development at all levels?
- How do we
retain our talent base from BSU, NTC, etc.?
- How can we bring our best
and brightest back to our community?
2. CREATING PROSPERITY – Cliff

Charge: Create and develop economic opportunities for broad-based
community prosperity.
Existing Destiny Drivers:
- Create 200 living wage jobs annually for ten years;
- BSU/NTC will
have five centers of excellence that will drive the regional economy.
- The
airport will be developed into a regional economic engine.
- Bemidji
will have access to the best technology/telecommunications in the
world.
Issues/Opportunities to consider:
- How can we create networks of innovation?
- How do we encourage
additional entrepreneurship activity?
- What is the next step for
Bemidji Bio, the Ingenuity Frontier and other clusters of innovation?
3. PROMOTING WELLNESS – Dave

Charge: Promote the general community health and wellness
of the Bemidji area citizenry.
Existing Destiny Drivers:
- Bemidji will have the lowest incidence of drug and alcohol abuse
in the state by 2015.
- By 2010, North Country Regional Hospital will
be selected as one of the top 100 hospitals in America.
Issues/Opportunities to consider:
- What community responses can we have for our teen suicide challenges?
- How
do we promote healthy eating habits?
- How do we encourage an active
lifestyles?
- How do we focus attention on mental health issues we
face?
4. BULDING A LIVABLE
COMMUNITY – Dave
Hengel - dhengel@hrdc.org
Charge: Build quality of place assets that positions
the Bemidji community as the best place in northern Minnesota to
live and raise a family.
Existing Destiny Drivers:
- There will be a multi-purpose events center in Bemidji by 2008
- By 2010, the SE Lake Bemidji aa will be the centerpiece lakeshore
development in Minnesota
- By 2010, downtown Bemidji will be vibrant and the center of community
life
- Bemidji will have the best trail network in Minnesota by 2015
- Will plant 10,000 trees a year for the next 10 years
- Lake Bemidji will be the cleanest urban lake in the state
- The Twin Cities will have four-lane access to the Bemidji area
Issues/Opportunities to consider:
- How do we get traction on the existing destiny drivers?
- What assets are will attract young families back to our community?
- Is it time to consider a recreation-based community center?
- How do we move the Headwaters Science Center project forward?
5. ENCOURAGING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT – Dave

Charge: Create a socially equitable and just community, where
community members have equal access to the opportunities and responsibilities
of community life
Existing Destiny Drivers:
- Bemidji Day at the Capital
- Shared Vision!
- Student Leadership and Engagement
Other Issues/Opportunities to consider:
- How do we actively promote broader community participation;
- How to we develop leadership bench-strength
- How do we create trusting relationships between community organizations?
